The hallmark of the Department of Medicine at Hebrew SeniorLife is its dedication to promoting excellence in the field of academic geriatric medicine. Our faculty is engaged in clinical care, research, and teaching medical students, medical residents, and other trainees.

Department of Medicine members also work as active collaborators with the staff of Hebrew SeniorLife's Institute for Aging Research, sharing data and research with faculty in the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's Division of Gerontology, and with colleagues throughout the world. Clinically, our staff of physicians and nurse practitioners provides inpatient and outpatient primary care in a variety of health-care settings. This includes the delivery of medical services to:

• Long-term care residents in our 640-bed chronic care unit at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center
• Short-term care patients in our Recuperative Services Unit
• Patients requiring extended medical and rehabilitative care in our Medical Acute Care Unit
• Patients admitted to the Geriatrics Service at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
• Members of Orchard Cove and NewBridge on the Charles, Hebrew SeniorLife's innovative continuing care retirement communities
• Residents at Hebrew SeniorLife's three congregate housing sites: Center Communities of Brookline, Simon C. Fireman Community in Randolph, and Jack Satter House in Revere.

Our psychiatry team works in concert with our primary care clinicians to provide specialized psychiatric and mental health diagnostic services, testing and therapy. They also collaborate with professionals in therapy services to help maximize physical function, regardless of the individual patient's level of impairment.

The department is supported by a mixture of clinical revenues, endowment funds, and both federal and foundation grants.

The Department of Medicine at Hebrew SeniorLife is committed to providing excellent care to geriatric patients in multiple settings; to designing and analyzing new approaches to care through research; and to teaching others what we know.

Programs and Services

In addition to primary care geriatrics and geropsychiatry, our physicians provide subspecialty services in:

• Cardiology
• Dermatology
• Gynecology
• Neurology
• Ophthalmology
• Oral Surgery
• Orthopedics
• Podiatry
• Rheumatology
• Surgery

We also oversee an exercise program under the supervision of a physiatrist specializing in eldercare; a Geriatric Dental Medicine Program; and consultative outpatient clinics in Memory Disorders, Osteoporosis, and Rehabilitation. 

Collaboration and Accreditations

The primary academic affiliation of our physician faculty is with Harvard Medical School. The Department of Medicine, together with the Beth Israel Deaconess Gerontology Division, comprise the Joint Center on Aging. In addition, Hebrew Rehabilitation Center serves as a major educational training site for the:

• Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program and the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Training Program at Harvard Medical School
• Geriatric Dental Medicine Fellowship and Residency Programs at both the Harvard and Boston University Schools of Dental Medicine
• Required, second-year Physical Diagnosis course for Harvard Medical and Dental students.
